IB PYP Learner Profile Experiences

In May, we focused on Caring. Families were invited to join students for lunch on International Day of the Family. Families and students also donated coins to the coin drive for bus passes for families at Mustard Seed School. In March we focused on the IB Learner attribute of Communicator. Students celebrated National Poetry Day by creating Dream Flag poems about their wishes for the world. Students then read them to an audience at recess. Our IB Learner Profile focus for February 2014 was about being Reflective. Students remembered their friend and classmate Kenji Kawaguchi who lost his battle to cancer in 2013. Students wore red (his favorite color) on his birthday (Feb 14th), and created Valentine-making packets for kids battling cancer at Sutter Hospital. Our IB Learner Profile focus for January 2014 was about being a RISK TAKER. Students who are risk takers have the daring to try new things. They try to solve problems in a lot of different ways. They have the bravery to tell people what they think is right.

Students participated in “Run it up the Flag Pole and See if Anyone Salutes” Day." Children drew pictures and wrote words about something they'd like to try even though they feel a little nervous about it.In December 2013, we focused on the IB Learner Profile attribute of being Principled. We observed Human Rights Day with students having the opportunity to create a paper Human Rights Quilt decorated with their ideas showing respect and fairness to all people. For our Learner Profile Experience in November 2013, we celebrated World Science Day for Peace and Development. This year’s theme was “Science for water cooperation: sharing data, knowledge and innovations.” In recognition of this day for global “Thinkers,” students created their own water filtering device to change dirty water into clean water. They also discussed the impact of having (and not having) access to clean water in our global communities.
Water Before and After our FilterIn October 2013, we focused on the Learner Profile attribute Inquirers. The Learner Profile Experience was our recognition of United Nations Day. Students played
cooperative games using the blacktop world map during recess to discover the countries in the United Nations. As a school-wide learning experience of Open-Minded in September 2013, we observed International Day of Peace. During recess students participated in the Pinwheels for Peace Project by creating pinwheels with messages for peace to plant in the front of the school.

The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. This aim is developed by helping students cultivate a set of attributes called the IB Learner Profile.

The Learner Profile is an important aspect of the IB PYP. You will hear and see this Learner Profile language throughout your years at Caleb Greenwood. Although this language and these attributes are developing all the time, we will highlight a Learner Profile attribute each month so students and families have a greater understanding of these important IB values. Throughout each month, we will focus on one attribute and we will have a culminating Learner Profile experience at the end of each month.
