August 11, 2020: Update from Principal Hanson

E-mail blast

Greetings, Caleb Families,

I hope this update finds you staying cool and safe in the midst of this heat wave. Caleb staff and I have been busy preparing for the school year so I have a few updates for you heading into the weekend. Please know that our information and schedules are constantly in flux. I understand the need for accurate and timely information as you prepare your families for distance learning and will do my best to adhere to publicized information, but as you’ll see below, changes happen and flexibility is required. I am continuing to advocate for and work to meet the needs of our students, families and staff, but I ask for your patience as I work to navigate district guidelines that enable us to equitably serve all students across our district.

Distance Learning Update

All SCUSD schools and students are returning to school via Distance Learning this fall. This includes all grade levels, from TK through 12th grade, general education students and those with IEPs for special education. There are no exceptions. The first day of school is Thursday, September 3. We do not know how long Distance Learning will continue, this depends entirely on Sacramento County of Education Guidelines. For more information about how SCUSD is returning back to school, please visit our district Return Together website. Caleb’s Distance Learning Plan is being developed in alignment with the district’s plan, for which some of the details are still being finalized and negotiated with labor partners. I ask that you remain patient and trust that I will provide concrete information as soon as I am able.

Class Lists: TBD

I know you all are anxiously awaiting class assignments. We had planned to release these on Monday, August 17, but due to a district procedural requirement, there is a slight delay. I am still hoping to get this information to you early next week, but am waiting for a greenlight from the district. If you have any concerns about this, I encourage you to reach out to Board Member Leticia Garcia to inquire about district-wide class list release dates.

Supply Lists, Materials Distribution & Chromebooks

Unlike in past years, we have not released classroom supply lists this year. Instead, we are planning Materials Distribution days during which families will pick up supply kits, textbooks and consumables (workbooks and such). Teachers will share specific grade-level supply needs at Back to School Night. Chromebooks will also be available during these distribution times. We have plenty, so there is no need to reserve one ahead of time. Distribution is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 24. More details to follow.

Be safe in the heat this weekend. And as always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
